About the Award

The African of the Year award project was initiated in 2008 to recognise and reward, annually, an exemplary African who has made extra-ordinary contribution to human development in any part of the continent, and in any sphere of human endeavour. Africans who have distinguished themselves in their various walks of life or do charity projects in their immediate communities that are of positive impact to the people.

Candidates for the award are shortlisted from a pool of nominees whose profiles and records of contribution have gone through a rigorous process of screening.

It enjoys the sponsorship support of UBA Plc which gave 50,000USD annually. The award is promoted by Daily Trust, one of Nigeria�s leading independent newspaper, in fulfillment of the newspaper's commitment to African unity and sustainable development across the continent.

Daily Trust Invites Nomination for African of the Year 2019 Award   A leading independent newspaper in Nigeria, DAILY TRUST, has called for nomination of exemplary personalities for the coveted African of the Year 2019. Nominations are open from August 19, 2019 to October 18, 2019. In a statement issued at the weekend, CEO/Editor-in-Chief of Media Trust Limited, publishers of DAILY TRUST, Mr. Mannir Dan-Ali, said ideal nominees should be ordinary Africans who have made extra-ordinary contributions to humanity in any field from any part of the continent. Mr. Dan-Ali disclosed that the award consists of three components, namely, a permanent plaque, a certificate of merit and a cash reward in aid of the awardee or his/her chosen charity project. Valid entries for the 2019 award will be for works, events or activities undertaken by the nominee between October 1, 2018 and September 30, 2019 and nominations are to be made online at award.dailytrust.com. The eventual winner will be selected by a seven-member prize committee chaired by his Excellency, Mr. Festus Mogae, former President of Botswana. Other members of the Committee who represent Africa's regional blocs are: Ambassador Mona Omar (North Africa), Mr. Amadou Mahtar Ba (West Africa), Ms. Gwen Lister (Southern Africa), Mr. Pascal Kambale (Central Africa) and Professor Sylvia Tamale (East Africa). The Chairman of the Board of Media Trust Limited, Mr. Kabiru Yusuf represents the award promoters. Now in its 12th edition, the African of the Year Award was inaugurated in 2008 by DAILY TRUST in fulfilment of the newspaper's commitment to African unity and sustainable development across the continent. With this annual award, Mr. Dan-Ali said the newspaper hopes to entrench the culture of selflessness among Africans with the aim of creating a pool of role-models for others to emulate.  The maiden award was presented to a Congolese gynaecologist, Dr. Denis Mukwege, in recognition of his exemplary humanitarian offer of free reconstructive surgery to victims of rape in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018, which is 10 years after DAILY TRUST, recognised his remarkable humanitarian gesture. Daily Trust annonce un appel à candidatures pour le prix Africain de l'année 2019 DAILY TRUST, un journal indépendant de premier plan au Nigéria, a appelé à la nomination de personnalités exemplaires pour le titre convoité de l'Africain de l'année 2019. Les candidatures sont ouvertes du 19 août 2019 au 18 octobre 2019.

Dans un communiqué publié ce week-end, le directeur général/rédacteur en chef de Media Trust Limited, les éditeurs de DAILY TRUST, M. Mannir Dan-Ali, a déclaré que les candidats idéaux devraient être des Africains ordinaires ayant apporté une contribution extraordinaire à l'humanité dans tous les pays, champ de n'importe quelle partie du continent.

M. Dan-Ali a révélé que le prix se composait de trois éléments: une plaque permanente, un certificat de mérite et une récompense en argent en faveur du récipiendaire ou de son projet caritatif choisi.

Les candidatures valides pour le prix 2019 concerneront des travaux, des événements ou des activités entreprises par le candidat entre le 1er octobre 2018 et le 30 septembre 2019; les nominations doivent être faites en ligne à l'adresse: award.dailytrust.com. Le gagnant éventuel sera sélectionné par un comité composé de sept membres, présidé par son excellence, M. Festus Mogae, ancien président du Botswana.

Les autres membres du comité représentant les blocs régionaux de l'Afrique sont: l'Ambassadrice Mona Omar (Afrique du Nord), M. Amadou Mahtar Ba (Afrique de l'Ouest), Mme Gwen Lister (Afrique du Sud), M. Pascal Kambale (Afrique centrale) et le Professeur Sylvia. Tamale (Afrique de l'Est). Le président du conseil d'administration de Media Trust Limited, M. Kabiru Yusuf, représente les promoteurs du prix.

DAILY TRUST, qui en est maintenant à sa 12e édition, a été inauguré en 2008 par le prix Africain de l'année, qui concrétise ainsi l'engagement du journal en faveur de l'unité africaine et du développement durable sur tout le continent. Avec ce prix annuel, M. Dan-Ali a déclaré que le journal espérait enraciner la culture du désintéressement chez les Africains dans le but de créer un vivier de modèles à imiter.

Le prix inaugural a été remis à un gynécologue congolais, le docteur Denis Mukwege, en reconnaissance de son offre humanitaire exemplaire en matière de chirurgie reconstructive gratuite pour les victimes de viol dans la République démocratique du Congo, déchirée par la guerre. Il a également remporté le prix Nobel de la paix en 2018, soit 10 ans après que DAILY TRUST ait reconnu son geste humanitaire remarquable.

Le prix de l’année dernière a été remporté par cinq filles du Kenya - Stacy Owino, Purity Achieng, Ivy Akinyi, Synthia Otieno et Macrine Atieno - (2018), pour avoir développé une application mobile permettant de lutter contre les mutilations génitales féminines.
